A Place with History

Anchor’s Drop has always been more than just a building — it’s a piece of Somerset’s heritage. For generations, it stood proudly on the dramatic cliffs of Blue Anchor Bay, first as a beloved seaside pub and now as a place for families and friends to come together. But our story hasn’t been easy. The very cliffs that give Anchor’s Drop its breathtaking views also made it once vulnerable to coastal erosion.

The Beginning — A Coastal Pub with History

For generations, Anchor’s Drop stood on the cliffs of Blue Anchor Bay.

Once a much-loved local pub, it was a place where families gathered and memories were made, blending history with breathtaking views.

The Threat of Coastal Erosion

For decades, Anchor's Drop faced the devastating impact of cliff falls and landslips, with the property at constant risk of being lost to the sea.

In 2018, the danger became so severe that urgent action was needed to save both the building and the nearby road.

Taking Action — Building Our Own Defenses

While waiting for help, our family refused to stand by.

In order to save our home, in 2019 we built our own sea defenses with our own hands, working tirelessly to hold back the tide and protect the property.

Every stone was a sign of our determination to preserve Anchor’s Drop for future generations.

Cara’s Campaign for Change

Led by Cara, we launched a campaign to raise awareness and secure support from the local council.

Through community action, media coverage, and sheer perseverance, Cara became the driving force behind a project to save this historic building.

Temporary Sea Defense Installed

In 2020, after 2 years of campaigning, a temporary sea defense system was installed to provide short-term protection for Anchor’s Drop.

While not a permanent solution, these defenses were vital in stabilizing the cliffs and preventing further destruction while plans for a long-term project were finalized.

This milestone gave us hope that the future of Anchor’s Drop could be secured.

The Turning Point — Permanent Protection Achieved

At last, the breakthrough we’d been fighting for!

In 2023, nearly 14,000 tonnes of rock armour were added to the coastline as part of a £3.5 million sea defense project.

This incredible effort now protects both Anchor’s Drop and the surrounding area, ensuring the property will remain secure for years to come.

A New Chapter

With Anchor’s Drop safe once again, in 2024 we re-opened our doors to the public.
What was once a local pub on the edge of collapse is now:

  • Exclusive Group Stays in the lovingly restored former pub

  • Six cozy holiday homes for seaside escapes

Today, we invite you to become part of our story — celebrating, relaxing, and creating memories on this stretch of coastline we fought so hard to protect.

Anchor’s Drop is a reminder of what can be achieved through determination, community spirit, and love for a place.

From a crumbling cliff edge to a thriving retreat, we’re proud to say:

“Anchor’s Drop is here to stay.”
